Sam is 4!

It's wild to think that I started this blog shortly after Sam as born and last week we celebrated his fourth birthday.  Where has the time gone?

Sam has grown so much over the last 4 years and it has been amazing to see his personality develop.  He is such a charming little boy.  He loves people and is so social with children and adults a like.  He is in his element when he has an audience that is laughing at his jokes, stories and antics - a long cry from the baby who used to scream if someone even looked in his general direction!

He is also such a perceptive and wise child.  He is very aware of others and their emotions and is very sensitive.  Although he has a fabulous sense of humor and loves to joke around, he is also quite reflective and takes his roles and responsibilities very seriously.  He makes connections that seem wise beyond his age with how others might be feeling, what their experiences are or how he is feeling at any given time.  Sometimes I am amazed at what he picks up.  I always joke that he will be an excellent husband one day - he will be very aware of his wife's emotions!

He also loves to learn.  He is like a little sponge.  I know I am biased but the teacher in me really does see a natural learner.  A few days ago he surprised me by mentally knowing a series of math facts that I have never formally taught him.  He is curious about everything and has a crazy memory where he stores up what he learns.  Sam will start preschool this fall and I am curious to see how he does in this new environment.  I have found a school that I think will be a perfect fit for him and meets my ridiculously high standards so I am hopefully it will be a fabulous experience for him.

We are so thankful for Sam.  He is the perfect fit for our family and is a wonderful big brother and example for Cole (and we know he will be great with his little sister too).  God truly blessed us by bringing this little boy into our lives!

As we were in Florida for his birthday and were not planning on doing any theme parks, we thought it would be fitting to take him to a character breakfast.  Sam loved every minute of it and was thrilled that Donald, Goofy and Minnie were all there to wish him a happy birthday.  There were Mickey waffles, a birthday button and card, and a cupcake with a candle all to help make his day special.  Sam was so excited that he has already decided that next year we should come back and do it again but this time for Cole's birthday (what a sweet brother).  The rest of the day was spent playing with family, opening presents and splashing around in the pool.  He was one pretty happy boy when we tucked him in at the end of the day.

Sun River and Portland for Mid Winter Break

Drew had a conference in Sun River OR this past winter and we made the call to tag along for a little vacation.  Things were slightly dampened by the fact that it appears Cole has developed car sickness since the summer. Ugh.  The drive was so long! However, it was worth it in the end and we had a wonderful time relaxing in an amazing little chalet, enjoying the snow, sitting in the hot tub, sledding and skating!  Couldn't have asked for more fun!  A stop at our favorite in Mt. Hood - El burro loco! A glass of wine after our 6 hour road trip turned into 10 hours due to car sickness!  Right before our Owl Walk.  We were told we could walk into the wood and hear the owls. What a bust!  3 cold and tired kids in the dark woods and no owls!  It's now a running joke in our home as the  tour guide kept 'hooting' trying to draw the owl's attention.  If we want someone's attention in the house we often hoot at each other now...

Thanksgiving

We have so much to be thankful for! We daily feel so grateful for all of the blessings in our life but it is nice to have a day to get together with family and reflect and relax. We had a wonderful Thanksgiving weekend in Long Island, NY with Drew's 'east coast' family. Sam enjoyed his second road trip out to Long Island and did fabulous! He got to see a lot of family again and finally get to meet his Great Granny! Sam got some early Christmas gifts this year and had a lot more enthusiasm unwrapping them than we expected!

Reflections

North shore School District hosted an art walk this year to highlight student work.  The theme was Imagine and students were tasked with creating some sort of 'art' that reflected the theme.  Sam came home one day and told us that he had submitted something.  What came as even more as a surprise was when we were contacted to say his piece was a qualifier to represent the school in the district art walk.  Sam was pretty thrilled with it and with his ribbon and didn't mind at all that his piece didn't move on to the next round of judging.  His best bud Owen had his work submitted as well and they enjoyed hanging out at the art show.
