I still don't know how exactly it happened but this year Drew found himself signed up to run the Hood to Coast Relay. As he works in the caner field his company put together a team - All In No Regrets in their stand up to cancer campaign.
Drew trained really well for this. I was impressed! In the months leading up to it he would do three runs - one in the morning, one before dinner and one early the next morning to prepare for his three legs. He felt pretty well prepared but as he had never done a run before he wasn't quite sure what to expect!
We decided as our last trip for the summer we would join him! He had a meeting a couple days before the run at the Resort at the Mountain by Mount Hood. The kids and I enjoyed all the hotel amenities while Drew had to work at his meeting! The pool was awesome and they had a mini golf course, playground and croquet field to play at!
Drew was the 7th leg so he didn't get to start at Mount Hood. One afternoon on his break we drove up to check out the starting line!
Drew left to run at 9AM on Friday morning. As he would be running through the night the kids and I stayed at the hotel for an extra day/night before checking out early Saturday morning and driving to Cannon Beach to meet him.
When we left the mountain we drove straight into a wild wind storm that was hitting the coast. The drive was insane as at times I had to drive around downed trees on the same road that we were taking to the coast. I can only imagine all those poor runners who had to deal with the weather!
Cannon Beach was a mess when we arrived. The wind was so intense. The kids could barley walk with their eyes open as the sand kept blowing in their faces. Drew was arriving a the finish line soon but we decided to not go and meet him. The after party had been canceled due to weather and I didn't want to have to find him and keep the kids out in the weather. We found a place for lunch, settled not the hotel and hit the pool instead!
A windy afternoon on the beach!
We were so impressed with how well Drew did on the race. He ran through beating sun, in the dead of night and through driving wind and rain. This last leg was a personal best in time per mile and he finished the race still being goofy as usual.
He was exhausted though when he met us at the hotel. We went out for supper with his running team and then called it an early night. I don't know who fell asleep first - Drew or the kids! He was out and didn't move all night. I however was kept awake by children talking in their sleep, falling out of bed and crawling all over me! Ha!
The next morning we had a beautiful beach in front of us. It was still a bit windy but nothing like the day before! Before packing up and heading home we spent the morning on the beach. This was my first time here and I loved it! It's beautiful!
