Didn't we just do this a couple years ago? The memory of Cole's broken tibia is still fresh in our mind and now we have another one with a broken bone!
Sam was at a birthday party with his buddies from his soccer team when somehow he did something to his ankle. He said he was jumping to get a ball and doesn't even know what happened but when he came down he fell facedown and hurt his ankle.
Luckily Drew was with him and was able to carry him to the car and get him home. We opted to avoid the ER as it was Sunday night and we knew they would just x ray, splint him and send him home if it was broken with a referral to children's.
I took him in to his pediatrician first thing Monday morning and she sent us to Evergreen for X-rays. Sure enough - sam's ankle was broken. He has a Salter Harris II fracture of his distal fibula. It did go through his growth plate which was not what we were hoping to hear.
Sam was a trooper through it all. We were given a referral to Children's and had to wait a few days until the swelling decreased. I was anxious to get to his appointment to have an idea of what we were dealing with. I had already had talked to his school and then had indicated they would want him in a wheelchair rather than crutches if he needed a fiberglass cast. Ugh! What a nightmare that would be.
When we got to children's we were thrilled to hear that they think his break will heal just beautifully and are not overly concerned about the growth plate. He is in an aircast rather than a fiberglass one (thank goodness) so he can walk and move around school. We return November 18th to re X-ray and see how he is healing up!
Sam is moving around quite well now that the pain is decreasing and our biggest challenge is to keep this boy from heading out to the field to play tackle football. Ha!
Looking at his get well card from his favorite crush. Our small group sent him loads of cards when we had to miss small group due to his leg.
