CA - Day 5

We had another beautiful California day.  We couldn't have asked for better weather.  We had loads of sun and mid to high 70's the entire time we were there.  We made our way early back to the Living Desert Zoo to enjoy seeing it in the daylight.  I went here with the boys two years ago as you can see by clicking here.

Again first on the to do list was to feed the giraffes. You can get so close to them and the cost of admission covers a giraffe feeding.  The boys both marched right up to them but Eliza was a bit shyer and admired them from the safety of mommy's arms.

We covered more of the zoo this time around.  Partly it was because last time I was on my own and this time we had Daddy's extra hands but also last time we were there the temperature was hitting 100 and this time it was much more pleasant in the 70's.

Last time we were there we didn't attend their show but we did this time around and I am so glad we did!  The show was short but amazing and we were able to get up close and personal with some of the animals.  The kids have watched the show Wild Kratts in the past and their favorite episode was one about a caracal and a serval.  Well, at this zoo that had a serval that was part of the show - very cool to see.  The kids also loved the hawk that flew through the crowd and the crested porcupine.

Eliza desperately needed a nap so after the zoo we headed back to the hotel and she slept while the boys did a bit of quiet time and then hit the pool with Drew.  Eliza and I joined later and although still sleepy she loved sitting with her feet in the hot tub.

We did supper out and then back again for bedtime.  After putting the kids to bed Drew and I would recline in the bathroom in our patio chairs (it sounds crazy but we had a huge bathroom) and would have some time to ourselves and catch up over a glass of wine.  Not overly glamorous but when you have sleeping babies in a hotel room you do what you can!

We have the same picture of the boys from two years ago so we needed to get another one

Plus, we needed to add Eliza to our updated photo

A black bellied sheep

They have a huge model train display - its so cool to watch

A red tailed Hawk

The serval

This guy had lots of cool tricks

So sleepy.  She is working he way into one nap as was so tired by the time we got home.  She was getting absolutely giddy.

Eliza still looking sleepy....dipping her toes in the hot tub

Sun River and Portland for Mid Winter Break

Drew had a conference in Sun River OR this past winter and we made the call to tag along for a little vacation.  Things were slightly dampened by the fact that it appears Cole has developed car sickness since the summer. Ugh.  The drive was so long! However, it was worth it in the end and we had a wonderful time relaxing in an amazing little chalet, enjoying the snow, sitting in the hot tub, sledding and skating!  Couldn't have asked for more fun!  A stop at our favorite in Mt. Hood - El burro loco! A glass of wine after our 6 hour road trip turned into 10 hours due to car sickness!  Right before our Owl Walk.  We were told we could walk into the wood and hear the owls. What a bust!  3 cold and tired kids in the dark woods and no owls!  It's now a running joke in our home as the  tour guide kept 'hooting' trying to draw the owl's attention.  If we want someone's attention in the house we often hoot at each other now...

Thanksgiving

We have so much to be thankful for! We daily feel so grateful for all of the blessings in our life but it is nice to have a day to get together with family and reflect and relax. We had a wonderful Thanksgiving weekend in Long Island, NY with Drew's 'east coast' family. Sam enjoyed his second road trip out to Long Island and did fabulous! He got to see a lot of family again and finally get to meet his Great Granny! Sam got some early Christmas gifts this year and had a lot more enthusiasm unwrapping them than we expected!

Reflections

North shore School District hosted an art walk this year to highlight student work.  The theme was Imagine and students were tasked with creating some sort of 'art' that reflected the theme.  Sam came home one day and told us that he had submitted something.  What came as even more as a surprise was when we were contacted to say his piece was a qualifier to represent the school in the district art walk.  Sam was pretty thrilled with it and with his ribbon and didn't mind at all that his piece didn't move on to the next round of judging.  His best bud Owen had his work submitted as well and they enjoyed hanging out at the art show.
