Last week I signed Sam up in an independent swimming lesson. I figured it would be a good step for him to prepare for preschool in the fall and also I really just feel swimming is an important skill for a child to learn.
Well I had hopes that it would be a glorious experience for him but I should have known better. For starters, he isn't too fond of being separated from me (even though I was just a few steps away on the bleachers). He also doesn't like his face getting splashed when he isn't expecting it nor does he like when people wear masks (of course, his teacher was wearing goggles...which to him equals a mask...geesh). Needless to say our first lesson resulted in Sam crying for mom most of the half hour while I avoided eye contact. Fun.
The class goes up to four kids and Sam was the only one in his class so he was basically set up to get private lessons (though I was paying a group rate). One of Sam's friends wanted to join the class but the mom didn't want to intrude on our find of getting one on one time. However, I convinced her to join us hoping that having a buddy would help Sam out a little.
Well, today for Sam's second lesson he had his little buddy with him. Although I can not write that he happily jumped in the pool I can say that it was much better. Sam wailed for about two minutes. The wailing then turned into a whimper. A few minutes later he was only scowling and a few minutes after that I saw what I had been hoping for...a smile, followed by a laugh.
We still have a long way to go to get this kid to be a fish in the pool like his father but hopefully now that he has a brave little friend with him we can have some fun!

| A terrible picture I know....however it was the only one I could get. Someone was not in the mood to have his picture taken. Maybe next week I can capture a smile :) |
