Maui - Day 5

Going to Hawaii in January has its benefits!  With having an ocean view we were able to frequently see whales from the lanai.  However, we decided to get a little closer one afternoon and take a whale watching tour.  Pacific Whale Foundation does awesome tours and Eliza and Cole were free so we figured we couldn't lose.  We got to see some pretty neat stuff. We saw mating competitions, whales breaching, surfacing, fin slapping and saw the classic tail shots.  Essentially at the end of the tour we were told if we didn't enjoy it, then whale watching was not for us as we saw just about all you could.  At one point we had to shut off the boat as the whales got within 100 feet of us.  They then proceeded to surface right beside the boat.  It was pretty amazing to see.

The kids did well but we definitely had our hands full on this one. Eliza was exhausted and slept in the carrier down below so I missed out on some of the amazing jumps we were seeing.  Drew stayed up with the boys but Cole was tired and Sam was hot so it was a bit of a juggling act for him.  We had quite a few people comment that the kids did great but boy did we have our hands full!  At one point someone said to me..."you guys needs some grandparents with you!"

We got a few pictures of the whales but nothing we got comes close to what we saw.  It makes me admire those people that get those great shots of whales breaching.  It seems impossible as you never know when and where they are going to pop up!

After the tour we grabbed a shave ice and played around on an outdoor play area.  By the time we made it back to our condo it was just in time to enjoy supper on our lanai while watching another amazing Maui sunset.

Sun River and Portland for Mid Winter Break

Drew had a conference in Sun River OR this past winter and we made the call to tag along for a little vacation.  Things were slightly dampened by the fact that it appears Cole has developed car sickness since the summer. Ugh.  The drive was so long! However, it was worth it in the end and we had a wonderful time relaxing in an amazing little chalet, enjoying the snow, sitting in the hot tub, sledding and skating!  Couldn't have asked for more fun!  A stop at our favorite in Mt. Hood - El burro loco! A glass of wine after our 6 hour road trip turned into 10 hours due to car sickness!  Right before our Owl Walk.  We were told we could walk into the wood and hear the owls. What a bust!  3 cold and tired kids in the dark woods and no owls!  It's now a running joke in our home as the  tour guide kept 'hooting' trying to draw the owl's attention.  If we want someone's attention in the house we often hoot at each other now...

Thanksgiving

We have so much to be thankful for! We daily feel so grateful for all of the blessings in our life but it is nice to have a day to get together with family and reflect and relax. We had a wonderful Thanksgiving weekend in Long Island, NY with Drew's 'east coast' family. Sam enjoyed his second road trip out to Long Island and did fabulous! He got to see a lot of family again and finally get to meet his Great Granny! Sam got some early Christmas gifts this year and had a lot more enthusiasm unwrapping them than we expected!

Reflections

North shore School District hosted an art walk this year to highlight student work.  The theme was Imagine and students were tasked with creating some sort of 'art' that reflected the theme.  Sam came home one day and told us that he had submitted something.  What came as even more as a surprise was when we were contacted to say his piece was a qualifier to represent the school in the district art walk.  Sam was pretty thrilled with it and with his ribbon and didn't mind at all that his piece didn't move on to the next round of judging.  His best bud Owen had his work submitted as well and they enjoyed hanging out at the art show.
