C is for....

Cookie Monster! We happened upon Cookie Monster quite by chance. The minute Sam saw him he wanted a picture so we made our way to the line to get a photo opt. Now, the following story basically sums up our children's approach to the 'unknown' perfectly! Sam, our eldest, our serious, reflective, and cautious little boy vs. Cole, our happy go lucky, bull in a china shop kinda guy.

So...

We sit and wait for Cookie. Sam is so excited, Cole could care less. With one person ahead of us I take Cole out of his stroller. In doing so, Cole catches a glimpse of Cookie and he is suddenly a writhing, wiggling, twisting, screeching and arching little boy who is desperate to get to this fuzzy blue guy no matter what the cost. I wrangle him as best I can until it is his turn, put him down on the ground and he runs as fast as his little legs can take him into the arms of cookie monster. I then look at Sam to find him cowering beside me. He will not budge. He had been so excited and now he was petrified of Cookie Monster and would not go near him. So Drew begins snapping photos while Cole giggles with Cookie Monster and I literally push Sam towards him. After a lot of pushing Sam summoned his courage and gave Cookie Monster a high five and then was totally thrilled with himself for being brave.

Drew and I laughed about how much of their little personalities came through at that moment. In some ways they are so similar but night and day in how they approach new situations. I knew if Sam had missed his chance to see Cookie Monster he would have been devastated yet had to push him (literally) to accomplish his goal. Cole, however, marched his way in without even blinking. I think it will be good for Sam to have such a fearless little brother who will push him just like I had to do to try new things! Who knew a guy in a blue furry costume could reveal so much about our kids personalities.

Here are a few pictures of the event. There are some I could easily crop to rid the picture of me pushing Sam but we kind of like them that way!

Pulling Sam towards Cookie

Cole loving every minute

Still pushing but with a little less force :)

Still pushing but a little bit closer....

Finally brave enough to stand on his own and get ready for a high five!

So love those two little munchkins. The pictures are perfect. This story is just so funny because I lived it with you and your cousins, including the part about the devastation if not pushed. Who can ever say there is no genetic component in personality.
Yes, Cole will likely push Sam and someday Sam might protect Cole from a bit too much impulsiveness. Precious little fellows.

Sun River and Portland for Mid Winter Break

Drew had a conference in Sun River OR this past winter and we made the call to tag along for a little vacation.  Things were slightly dampened by the fact that it appears Cole has developed car sickness since the summer. Ugh.  The drive was so long! However, it was worth it in the end and we had a wonderful time relaxing in an amazing little chalet, enjoying the snow, sitting in the hot tub, sledding and skating!  Couldn't have asked for more fun!  A stop at our favorite in Mt. Hood - El burro loco! A glass of wine after our 6 hour road trip turned into 10 hours due to car sickness!  Right before our Owl Walk.  We were told we could walk into the wood and hear the owls. What a bust!  3 cold and tired kids in the dark woods and no owls!  It's now a running joke in our home as the  tour guide kept 'hooting' trying to draw the owl's attention.  If we want someone's attention in the house we often hoot at each other now...

Thanksgiving

We have so much to be thankful for! We daily feel so grateful for all of the blessings in our life but it is nice to have a day to get together with family and reflect and relax. We had a wonderful Thanksgiving weekend in Long Island, NY with Drew's 'east coast' family. Sam enjoyed his second road trip out to Long Island and did fabulous! He got to see a lot of family again and finally get to meet his Great Granny! Sam got some early Christmas gifts this year and had a lot more enthusiasm unwrapping them than we expected!

Reflections

North shore School District hosted an art walk this year to highlight student work.  The theme was Imagine and students were tasked with creating some sort of 'art' that reflected the theme.  Sam came home one day and told us that he had submitted something.  What came as even more as a surprise was when we were contacted to say his piece was a qualifier to represent the school in the district art walk.  Sam was pretty thrilled with it and with his ribbon and didn't mind at all that his piece didn't move on to the next round of judging.  His best bud Owen had his work submitted as well and they enjoyed hanging out at the art show.
