Cole is 4!

Cole is officially a 4 year old.  To anyone who asked he called himself 3 1/2 right up to the night before his big day but this morning when he ran into our room he had turned four.  We told him he sure looks different - bigger and stronger and his response was "I know! I'm four now!"

Cole has always been a ray of sunshine.  He can have his grouchy moments (and when he's mad...he's MAD) but ultimately he is just one happy kid.  He goes through life with a bit of a happy go lucky attitude.  He is flexible, content, independent, strong, and brave.  He is kind to everyone and has no problem finding any and every mom at school pick up and saying hi or snuggling up to them.  His Sunday school and MOPS school teachers would always rave when he would arrive to class as they said he just lit up the room.  He truly does.  Cole has a way of just making you smile.  He has a wonderful little laugh and glint in his eye that really put people at ease.  That same glint that puts people at ease will probably allow him to get away with a little mischief too.  The little guy just bats his eyes (and insanely long eyelashes) at his teachers and I am sure a lot of his goofiness gets overlooked.

He is growing up so fast.  As he's the second kiddo sometimes his major milestones are overlooked until suddenly one day you realize he is doing something he never did before or accomplishing tasks that are unexpected.  I can't believe that in the fall he will be off to preschool and then *gasp* kindergarten.

At times Cole seems like his head is in the clouds but he can be quite an observant little guy.  He really is attentive to Sam's friends and they are very kind to him as well.  He watches his big brother and is quick to try to pick up on his skills.  He is starting to really test out some of his athletic skills and already can't wait to play soccer like Sam.  He loves to watch his games now and it might seem like he zoning out but in fact he is watching the plays and keeping track of who's winning.

Cole is so brave.  It's amazing what a good match he is for Sam.  Sam can be so hesitant and cautious, and then Cole just runs right on past him and dives into a new situation.  It helps push Sam a little to try new things yet Sam brings a bit of balance to Cole and probably keeps him out of a bit of trouble.  Cole and Eliza have a special relationship too.  Every morning she calls for him - "Coley, Coley, are you?"  It's really sweet.  She adores him and it is nice for him to be the 'big brother' when Sam is at school.

Cole was very excited about his and Sam's Ninja birthday party this year.  Cole has developed a few friendships apart from Sam' this year and he was so excited that his buddies could come.  He counted down every day for two months for his big day.  He has so much fun at his party...pictures of the big ninja party event coming soon!

We are simply so blessed to have this little man in our family.  Just a perfect fit.  Love you Coley - happy 4th birthday!

Presents!  we didn't do an opening at the birthday party - there were just too many kids so Cole (and Sam too) enjoyed opening and playing with their presents this afternoon

I love his smile here...this just kinda sums him up.  Our happy boy!

Ninja Cole

Eliza wouldn't let me put her headband on...until watching her brothers for a few minutes.  Then she wanted hers too.

Ninja Sam

Our three crazy ninjas

It seems we are becoming a yearly tradition of birthday suppers out and then a trip to spend a little birthday money.  Cole was so excited he got his own sundae...and ate every.last.bite.

Eliza loved her bit of dessert too...and made herself into nice chocolate mess.

Sun River and Portland for Mid Winter Break

Drew had a conference in Sun River OR this past winter and we made the call to tag along for a little vacation.  Things were slightly dampened by the fact that it appears Cole has developed car sickness since the summer. Ugh.  The drive was so long! However, it was worth it in the end and we had a wonderful time relaxing in an amazing little chalet, enjoying the snow, sitting in the hot tub, sledding and skating!  Couldn't have asked for more fun!  A stop at our favorite in Mt. Hood - El burro loco! A glass of wine after our 6 hour road trip turned into 10 hours due to car sickness!  Right before our Owl Walk.  We were told we could walk into the wood and hear the owls. What a bust!  3 cold and tired kids in the dark woods and no owls!  It's now a running joke in our home as the  tour guide kept 'hooting' trying to draw the owl's attention.  If we want someone's attention in the house we often hoot at each other now...

Thanksgiving

We have so much to be thankful for! We daily feel so grateful for all of the blessings in our life but it is nice to have a day to get together with family and reflect and relax. We had a wonderful Thanksgiving weekend in Long Island, NY with Drew's 'east coast' family. Sam enjoyed his second road trip out to Long Island and did fabulous! He got to see a lot of family again and finally get to meet his Great Granny! Sam got some early Christmas gifts this year and had a lot more enthusiasm unwrapping them than we expected!

Reflections

North shore School District hosted an art walk this year to highlight student work.  The theme was Imagine and students were tasked with creating some sort of 'art' that reflected the theme.  Sam came home one day and told us that he had submitted something.  What came as even more as a surprise was when we were contacted to say his piece was a qualifier to represent the school in the district art walk.  Sam was pretty thrilled with it and with his ribbon and didn't mind at all that his piece didn't move on to the next round of judging.  His best bud Owen had his work submitted as well and they enjoyed hanging out at the art show.
