A Whole Hand

Sam is officially a 'whole hand' old today.

Amazing.  It is hard to believe it has been 5 years since our world was turned upside down with the arrival of our 8 lbs 12oz little boy. Sam's arrival marked the beginning of our journey into parenthood.  It is simply mind blowing to think of the changes our little man has gone through in his past 5 years.  He has grown from a tiny, dependent little baby to a strong, brave, thoughtful, sensitive, funny, intelligent, curious, social and loving boy.

Brand new...

5 years later...

His face was glowing when he walked into our room this morning.  He has been counting down for weeks - finally he was five! He proceed to run downstairs to wake up Grandpa and Oma yelling "here comes a 5 year old."

It was a beautiful day!  We started it with crepes for breakfast (topped with whipped cream of course) and a few gifts.  Then the boys and I headed over to Sam's 'best' friends house.  They were having a garage sale and had set a few toys aside for Eliza so we went to say hi and of course Sam was thrilled he got to see Natthan on his birthday.  After arriving home we picked up everyone else and headed to Alki Beach to see the arrival of the Sea Fair Pirates.  We weren't really sure what we were doing but thought it would be fun to try.  It was packed!  The boys were pretty enthralled with all the action and got a kick out of watching a high jump competition on the beach.  The pirates initially were a little intimidating but both boys enjoyed getting their pictures snapped with a couple and we heard a lot of 'arrrghs' the rest of the afternoon.

After getting home and enjoying a very relaxing quiet time we took Sam out for his birthday dinner.  He really wanted to go to the same place we went on Cole's birthday - he wanted a mile high mud pie for his dessert as well.  Also, he reasoned that the restaurant was close to Target...and he had some birthday money burning a hole in his pocket.

We asked Sam before he went to bed if he had a good birthday - his response "Oh yeah."  What a sweet boy we have been blessed with.  Happy birthday Sam - we love you!

The birthday boy and his brother!

First on the agenda - present opening!

Cole had a few late gifts as well - and got to open them alongside Sam.

"Oh yeah!"  We heard that phrase a lot today!

Little sister had a blast at Alki!

Watching for the pirate boat.

Sam, Cole and their pirate buddies...Sam looks scared here but I actually think he is saying 'Arrrgh'

Ahoy Matey - we have a five year old in the house

Out for supper...waiting for his dessert!

Sun River and Portland for Mid Winter Break

Drew had a conference in Sun River OR this past winter and we made the call to tag along for a little vacation.  Things were slightly dampened by the fact that it appears Cole has developed car sickness since the summer. Ugh.  The drive was so long! However, it was worth it in the end and we had a wonderful time relaxing in an amazing little chalet, enjoying the snow, sitting in the hot tub, sledding and skating!  Couldn't have asked for more fun!  A stop at our favorite in Mt. Hood - El burro loco! A glass of wine after our 6 hour road trip turned into 10 hours due to car sickness!  Right before our Owl Walk.  We were told we could walk into the wood and hear the owls. What a bust!  3 cold and tired kids in the dark woods and no owls!  It's now a running joke in our home as the  tour guide kept 'hooting' trying to draw the owl's attention.  If we want someone's attention in the house we often hoot at each other now...

Thanksgiving

We have so much to be thankful for! We daily feel so grateful for all of the blessings in our life but it is nice to have a day to get together with family and reflect and relax. We had a wonderful Thanksgiving weekend in Long Island, NY with Drew's 'east coast' family. Sam enjoyed his second road trip out to Long Island and did fabulous! He got to see a lot of family again and finally get to meet his Great Granny! Sam got some early Christmas gifts this year and had a lot more enthusiasm unwrapping them than we expected!

Reflections

North shore School District hosted an art walk this year to highlight student work.  The theme was Imagine and students were tasked with creating some sort of 'art' that reflected the theme.  Sam came home one day and told us that he had submitted something.  What came as even more as a surprise was when we were contacted to say his piece was a qualifier to represent the school in the district art walk.  Sam was pretty thrilled with it and with his ribbon and didn't mind at all that his piece didn't move on to the next round of judging.  His best bud Owen had his work submitted as well and they enjoyed hanging out at the art show.
