A Weekend At The Beach

It seemed like forever ago that we booked a weekend getaway with friends from Calgary but now it is already over and done!

We didn't go far - just an hour north to Camano Island but it was so relaxing and felt like we were far from home.  We are so thankful the Cheesman's were able to come as a week before the trip their parents home was victim to the massive flooding in Calgary.  It was a little touch and go but they managed to work hard with the clean up so they could take a little break.

The house we rented was absolutely perfect!  It had everything we needed and really added to the experience.  We didn't have to go anywhere - we had everything we could possible need to relax and entertain kids.  A huge stretch of private beach to enjoy - check.  A fire pit to roast marshmallows - check.  A hot tub to relax in - check.  Kayaks and a boat to take out on the water - check.  A beautiful house, toys, high chairs, pack n plays, books, and bikes- check!  To top it off we had amazing weather - we were outside most of the days!

It was so good to catch up with our friends and watch our kids all interact together.  They all got along amazingly well.   It was so nice as it gave the grown ups a lot of time to chat and visit as well. Even though we see the Cheesman's only a couple times a year, when we get together with them it's like we haven't missed a day.

Maybe this will have to be an annual tradition!

Our home for the weekend!  Isn't it beautiful?  It was completely gated too which meant the kids could run all over and we didn't have to worry about them escaping!

We made it to the rental right at check in and had a couple hours to play before the Cheesmans arrived. When they were a few minutes away we waited out for them on these beautiful porch swings.

The beach was a little rocky for Cole with his boot but he managed well as long as he had someone with him to help him along.

The kids (minus Eliza).  They had only been together for minutes before they were out on the beach mucking around.

The big shell sale.  The kids collected shells all morning to set up a 'sale'  Sam was wheeling and dealing - a buck a shell!

Auntie Jess paying for a shell (the boys settled for nickels instead of dollars)

We brought a little pool and a sprinkler along as well which was perfect when the kids needed to cool off (it was hot) Eliza was not a big fan of getting her toes wet though - she prefers warm bath water to cold hose water.

The kids trying to get a laugh out of her in the little pool

Cole enjoying the sprinkler (without his boot!!!!) while waiting for his turn in the kayak with Daddy.

Our view...so amazing.

The grown ups loved bedtime.  We spent our nights sitting out enjoying the view...and the company

A quick family shot before we went on our one outing of the weekend - out for pizza!

Smores!  What a mess but the kiddos loved them (and the fireworks that were set off while they enjoyed them)

Griffin did not think the trip would be complete without finding a crab.  With hours before check out Uncle David finally found one.  He was tiny but did the trick.

Our little crab.  His name?  Strawberry Thunderbolt.  Can you guess the name Jayna gave him and the name all the boys picked?

Cole saying goodbye to our beach home.  Maybe we will be back!

Sun River and Portland for Mid Winter Break

Drew had a conference in Sun River OR this past winter and we made the call to tag along for a little vacation.  Things were slightly dampened by the fact that it appears Cole has developed car sickness since the summer. Ugh.  The drive was so long! However, it was worth it in the end and we had a wonderful time relaxing in an amazing little chalet, enjoying the snow, sitting in the hot tub, sledding and skating!  Couldn't have asked for more fun!  A stop at our favorite in Mt. Hood - El burro loco! A glass of wine after our 6 hour road trip turned into 10 hours due to car sickness!  Right before our Owl Walk.  We were told we could walk into the wood and hear the owls. What a bust!  3 cold and tired kids in the dark woods and no owls!  It's now a running joke in our home as the  tour guide kept 'hooting' trying to draw the owl's attention.  If we want someone's attention in the house we often hoot at each other now...

Thanksgiving

We have so much to be thankful for! We daily feel so grateful for all of the blessings in our life but it is nice to have a day to get together with family and reflect and relax. We had a wonderful Thanksgiving weekend in Long Island, NY with Drew's 'east coast' family. Sam enjoyed his second road trip out to Long Island and did fabulous! He got to see a lot of family again and finally get to meet his Great Granny! Sam got some early Christmas gifts this year and had a lot more enthusiasm unwrapping them than we expected!

Reflections

North shore School District hosted an art walk this year to highlight student work.  The theme was Imagine and students were tasked with creating some sort of 'art' that reflected the theme.  Sam came home one day and told us that he had submitted something.  What came as even more as a surprise was when we were contacted to say his piece was a qualifier to represent the school in the district art walk.  Sam was pretty thrilled with it and with his ribbon and didn't mind at all that his piece didn't move on to the next round of judging.  His best bud Owen had his work submitted as well and they enjoyed hanging out at the art show.
