The Party

Eliza's first year flew by.  In fact, since it flew by so fast we figured the theme of her first birthday should be something that represented that.  The first thought that came to mind - hot air balloons!

The day of her real birthday Eliza had some birthday practice at home with our family and Grandpa and Oma.  Throughout the day she loved hearing happy birthday phone calls and was over the moon when we sang happy birthday to her and presented her with a cupcake and candle.  Afterwards she wasted no time and went right to work opening her presents.  I don't know how she knew that they were for her or what to do with them but she was a present opening pro.  She went to bed that night again holding the hand of her Bitty Baby and also the Stella doll that grandma had given her.

The day after her birthday was party day.  Eliza was so excited - she just knew all the commotion was for her.  She again was thrilled to have more cake and open up her presents.  She had a wonderful party and was exhausted by the end of the night (she had refused her afternoon nap!)  However, before bed after guests were gone she put on quite a show and demonstrated some pretty controlled walking.  She has taken steps before but this night she was much more balanced than she has been.  It won't be long now!

Sun River and Portland for Mid Winter Break

Drew had a conference in Sun River OR this past winter and we made the call to tag along for a little vacation.  Things were slightly dampened by the fact that it appears Cole has developed car sickness since the summer. Ugh.  The drive was so long! However, it was worth it in the end and we had a wonderful time relaxing in an amazing little chalet, enjoying the snow, sitting in the hot tub, sledding and skating!  Couldn't have asked for more fun!  A stop at our favorite in Mt. Hood - El burro loco! A glass of wine after our 6 hour road trip turned into 10 hours due to car sickness!  Right before our Owl Walk.  We were told we could walk into the wood and hear the owls. What a bust!  3 cold and tired kids in the dark woods and no owls!  It's now a running joke in our home as the  tour guide kept 'hooting' trying to draw the owl's attention.  If we want someone's attention in the house we often hoot at each other now...

Thanksgiving

We have so much to be thankful for! We daily feel so grateful for all of the blessings in our life but it is nice to have a day to get together with family and reflect and relax. We had a wonderful Thanksgiving weekend in Long Island, NY with Drew's 'east coast' family. Sam enjoyed his second road trip out to Long Island and did fabulous! He got to see a lot of family again and finally get to meet his Great Granny! Sam got some early Christmas gifts this year and had a lot more enthusiasm unwrapping them than we expected!

Reflections

North shore School District hosted an art walk this year to highlight student work.  The theme was Imagine and students were tasked with creating some sort of 'art' that reflected the theme.  Sam came home one day and told us that he had submitted something.  What came as even more as a surprise was when we were contacted to say his piece was a qualifier to represent the school in the district art walk.  Sam was pretty thrilled with it and with his ribbon and didn't mind at all that his piece didn't move on to the next round of judging.  His best bud Owen had his work submitted as well and they enjoyed hanging out at the art show.
