It's Been A Big Week

It has been a week of accomplishments in the Hiller house!  Our kids wasted no time after our return from Hawaii to make some big changes!

Sam

Our sweet Sam is growing up!  He is such a determined little boy and so driven.  He loves to learn and seriously is like a sponge..he soaks up every little detail!  He has always been interested in words and language and has wanted to know how to write, spell and read.  It has been clear he has recognized words for awhile now (our attempts at spelling out our secrets are becoming futile) but it seems now he is ready to read!  I just love his preschool and his teacher told me when we started that if kids were ready to read she would work on it with them in their individual time.  Well, last week a note was sent home that Sam read his first book.  The next day he read another one at our house and yesterday was on to one more.  His teacher sent a note home with us this week that for free of charge she was going to hold a reading club on Tuesday mornings for a couple of hours for kids in her program that were ready to read and invited Sam to join her class.  Well, he is over the moon excited!  He is thrilled that he was specially invited as apparently only some of the kids in his class will be there and can't wait to start reading more.  He is simply growing up too fast!

Cole

Ahhhh!  Finally our little Cole is out of diapers! It is amazing how overnight he just looks "older."  The transition was pretty easy for the most part and the little monkey is pretty proud of himself.  We knew he was ready but held off for a bit to get a little more settled with Eliza.  We had thought about starting to give him a little push in February or March if he did not initiate before then but the little guy took control and decided the day after we returned from Hawaii that he was putting on big kid underwear.  He did great right off the bat and totally initiates all on his own - he never needed any prompting or reminding from us.  He developed a bit of a fear of the toilet for a few days where he refused to go to the bathroom, was adamant that he would not have an accident, but also refused to put a diaper back on which made things a little interesting as he was simply out of options as to what to do!  However, it appears this is diminishing quickly and he is back to his confident self.  We are just so proud of him and  are even more excited not to be changing his diapers anymore!

Eliza

Well, Eliza hasn't really hit any other milestones other than that she turned 4 months old last week.  She is such a funny little thing and it is so exciting to watch her change.  She is growing like a weed (everyone we saw in Hawaii couldn't hide their shock when we told them how old she was and would comment that she was a big girl!)  We have her wellness appointment next week and I will not be surprised if she is still in the 90th percentile - oh you should see her thighs!  She is so smiley (except when a camera is on her) and continues to become much more interactive.  Her fussiness is really diminishing and you can often hear the boys tell her "good job Eliza - you didn't scream at all during this car ride!" She loves to babble and you can have such cute conversations with her.  The day we returned from Hawaii she seemed determined to roll over. She tries to lunge herself over but still just can't swing those legs over to finalize the roll.  I am sure it will come soon!  She was just starting to sleep well but with so much illness and travel over January it has really messed with her schedule.  Also, at 4 months all of our kids seem to hit the dreaded 4 month sleep regression where their sleep pattern gets a little funky and we are definitely in that now.  The little girl does not seem to understand that this mama needs her sleep! Everyone just loves having her around - she is so sweet.  It is amazing to watch how all 4 of us can be around her doing all sorts of goofy things to get her to laugh.  This girl definitely gets a lot of attention!

Sun River and Portland for Mid Winter Break

Drew had a conference in Sun River OR this past winter and we made the call to tag along for a little vacation.  Things were slightly dampened by the fact that it appears Cole has developed car sickness since the summer. Ugh.  The drive was so long! However, it was worth it in the end and we had a wonderful time relaxing in an amazing little chalet, enjoying the snow, sitting in the hot tub, sledding and skating!  Couldn't have asked for more fun!  A stop at our favorite in Mt. Hood - El burro loco! A glass of wine after our 6 hour road trip turned into 10 hours due to car sickness!  Right before our Owl Walk.  We were told we could walk into the wood and hear the owls. What a bust!  3 cold and tired kids in the dark woods and no owls!  It's now a running joke in our home as the  tour guide kept 'hooting' trying to draw the owl's attention.  If we want someone's attention in the house we often hoot at each other now...

Thanksgiving

We have so much to be thankful for! We daily feel so grateful for all of the blessings in our life but it is nice to have a day to get together with family and reflect and relax. We had a wonderful Thanksgiving weekend in Long Island, NY with Drew's 'east coast' family. Sam enjoyed his second road trip out to Long Island and did fabulous! He got to see a lot of family again and finally get to meet his Great Granny! Sam got some early Christmas gifts this year and had a lot more enthusiasm unwrapping them than we expected!

Reflections

North shore School District hosted an art walk this year to highlight student work.  The theme was Imagine and students were tasked with creating some sort of 'art' that reflected the theme.  Sam came home one day and told us that he had submitted something.  What came as even more as a surprise was when we were contacted to say his piece was a qualifier to represent the school in the district art walk.  Sam was pretty thrilled with it and with his ribbon and didn't mind at all that his piece didn't move on to the next round of judging.  His best bud Owen had his work submitted as well and they enjoyed hanging out at the art show.
