Pink!

This past week we got a first glimpse at our little baby.  It is always so amazing to get that first peek and fascinating to see all little details of our growing baby.

As we were leaving for Calgary right after the appointment we had the kids in tow with us for the ultrasound.  We were a little worried about how to keep them occupied as we figured there was only so long they would be interested in the black and white images but we were truly given such a gift.  First of all, Cole slept!  He fell asleep in the van and transferred from the van, down an elevator, through the hospital lobby, up an elevator, into the office, and through every minute of the 45 minute ultrasound.  Secondly, Sam was enthralled.  He watched every minute of our ultrasound, asking questions and pointing out what he saw.  We did not have to use a single trick to keep him occupied.

After having confirmation of a healthy baby (which was our main desire) we knew the time was coming to see if we were having a boy or a girl.  We were really excited to find out this time around as this last little one will complete our family.  A couple of times during the ultrasound I had noticed that a few shots seemed to point more towards a girl but still wasn't convinced.  However, a couple minutes later the ultrasound tech froze the screen and asked us to take our guess.  There was really no mistaking it - it was definitely a girl!

Even though I had a few suspicions throughout this pregnancy that we could be having a girl I never really allowed myself to entertain them.  I would tell people I was sick with the boys but not with this one - oh, it must be a girl they would reply.  I would say that I was carrying differently than the boys (still not in any maternity wear yet despite having a growing belly) and they would say - I bet that means girl.  However, any feeling I had I would quickly brush off and start to prep for a boy.  It is not that I wouldn't have been thrilled to bits to have another boy, it's just that there is something special about getting to experience both genders.

So a girl it is!  Sam was thrilled.  He had been asking for a girl right from the start.  He is convinced his family needs to be even...three boys (Dad, Sam and Cole) and three girls (Mom, Jasper and baby). However the best was Sam's response after finding out the verdict was pink - "Hooray!  Now we can stop having babies!"

Yes Sam, yes we can (although we would have stopped even if #3 was a boy!) Ha!

Sun River and Portland for Mid Winter Break

Drew had a conference in Sun River OR this past winter and we made the call to tag along for a little vacation.  Things were slightly dampened by the fact that it appears Cole has developed car sickness since the summer. Ugh.  The drive was so long! However, it was worth it in the end and we had a wonderful time relaxing in an amazing little chalet, enjoying the snow, sitting in the hot tub, sledding and skating!  Couldn't have asked for more fun!  A stop at our favorite in Mt. Hood - El burro loco! A glass of wine after our 6 hour road trip turned into 10 hours due to car sickness!  Right before our Owl Walk.  We were told we could walk into the wood and hear the owls. What a bust!  3 cold and tired kids in the dark woods and no owls!  It's now a running joke in our home as the  tour guide kept 'hooting' trying to draw the owl's attention.  If we want someone's attention in the house we often hoot at each other now...

Thanksgiving

We have so much to be thankful for! We daily feel so grateful for all of the blessings in our life but it is nice to have a day to get together with family and reflect and relax. We had a wonderful Thanksgiving weekend in Long Island, NY with Drew's 'east coast' family. Sam enjoyed his second road trip out to Long Island and did fabulous! He got to see a lot of family again and finally get to meet his Great Granny! Sam got some early Christmas gifts this year and had a lot more enthusiasm unwrapping them than we expected!

Reflections

North shore School District hosted an art walk this year to highlight student work.  The theme was Imagine and students were tasked with creating some sort of 'art' that reflected the theme.  Sam came home one day and told us that he had submitted something.  What came as even more as a surprise was when we were contacted to say his piece was a qualifier to represent the school in the district art walk.  Sam was pretty thrilled with it and with his ribbon and didn't mind at all that his piece didn't move on to the next round of judging.  His best bud Owen had his work submitted as well and they enjoyed hanging out at the art show.
