How is it possible that school is already started! The summer went too fast!
Sam was up first. We met his teacher at an open house right before the labor day weekend. I was quite nervous for him because he literally knew no one in his new class. He and all his friends were dispersed between the 5 first grade classrooms. He had a few familiar faces of some girls from kindergarten but there was no one there that he had ever connected with. Mama started to worry.
I tried not to let Sam know I was worried. I had heard wonderful things about his teacher and was thankful that he got in that class as there were a few teachers I knew would not be a good fit for him. I would much rather him have a great teacher and maximize his learning than buddies in his class that he would fool around with!
Sam was laid back all weekend and even the morning of his first day was nothing but smiles. However, once we arrived at school the 'newness' of everything hit him. New teacher, new class, new rules, full day, no friends. He seemed to come to this realization all at once and you could instantly see the stress on his face. He held it together just fine and to an outside observer you would never know but to his mom I could tell he was working really hard to be brave. His teacher wasted no time settling the children in and ushering the parents out. He watched me leave from the window with big, scared eyes. I held it together until about half way home and then had a little cry while Drew reassured me.
After we got home Drew left for work and I welcomed 8 mommy friends into my home for a first grade mom's first day of school brunch. Honestly I think it was the best thing I could have done to take my mind off things. We all had a great time visiting and the younger siblings all love playing together so they all entertained each other while the moms swapped stories. I think this will definitely become my yearly tradition! My last friend left around noon and it wasn't long before 3:00 rolled around and we left to pick up Sam.
Sam's first words when he saw me after I picked him up were simply - Best. Day.Ever. He then clarified that maybe it wasn't his best day, but his best school day. H talked up a storm about how his teacher had a box of hundreds of ladybugs and let them loose in the class and how they studied them using bug catchers and magnifying glasses. He was hooked. He said his teacher was very nice and never yells and he has a wonderful, sweet young student teacher to boot - yay! He has a special meeting spot where he meets his old friends to play for both of his recesses. He has started telling me about some of the kids in his class and how nice they are. Today he said, "you know the boy I sit beside, Henry, his is really nice. I think he could be a good friend" He's figuring out his routines, doing his daily homework happily, loving that he gets gym and music this year and just becoming a grown up first grader.
I am so proud of our little guy for taking all this change in stride.

Cole had found this jacket and glasses and dressed up as a 'teacher' this morning. He and Sam thought it was a pretty funny gig. I had a grab a few pics.
a couple hours after coming home Sam lost his 3rd tooth. He was pretty excited as it meant he was the first kid who got to take home his classrooms tooth journal to write about his lost tooth.
