Berry Picking

Today we decided to venture out and find some berries.  We love collecting blackberries when we go for walks (those bushes are everywhere) but for kids picking blackberries while avoiding all the prickles is a bit of a trick so we thought blueberries might be more up their alley.

Who knew berry picking could be so fun!  It seriously is addictive.  Field and fields of beautiful blueberries - how do you stop when there are so many perfect ones to pick?  We hauled in 18 lbs of blueberries and then on our way to lunch found a raspberry patch that was still open for picking and managed to get another 3.5 lbs of raspberries in about 15 minutes!

Sam loved the berry picking and really got into it.  He actually picked quite a bit and helped to contribute to our growing pile.  Cole just liked eating them.  He would put one in his bucket, take a look at it and then opt for popping it in his mouth instead.

So what to do with so many berries?  Let's just say we will have fresh blueberries this winter as we froze about 18 Ziploc bags full of blueberries.  In addition, Grammy brought her no fail pie crust recipe and made us an amazing blueberry, raspberry and blackberry pie for dessert.  Yum.

I think this will have to be a yearly event...such a fun activity to do as a family!

The homemade pie mid way.   I have no after pictures as we just dug into right away!

Sun River and Portland for Mid Winter Break

Drew had a conference in Sun River OR this past winter and we made the call to tag along for a little vacation.  Things were slightly dampened by the fact that it appears Cole has developed car sickness since the summer. Ugh.  The drive was so long! However, it was worth it in the end and we had a wonderful time relaxing in an amazing little chalet, enjoying the snow, sitting in the hot tub, sledding and skating!  Couldn't have asked for more fun!  A stop at our favorite in Mt. Hood - El burro loco! A glass of wine after our 6 hour road trip turned into 10 hours due to car sickness!  Right before our Owl Walk.  We were told we could walk into the wood and hear the owls. What a bust!  3 cold and tired kids in the dark woods and no owls!  It's now a running joke in our home as the  tour guide kept 'hooting' trying to draw the owl's attention.  If we want someone's attention in the house we often hoot at each other now...
