Up We Go

As much as we were excited to go to Hawaii, we were less thrilled about the time it took to get there. We have done long flights with Sam in the past when we lived in PA, but with two kids there is a bigger chance that someone is going to lose it somewhere over the Pacific.

We prepared...snacks, DVD's, kid's apps for the phone, books, toys...you name it, we had it. We formulated a game plan of what to check / not to check and how to get through security in record time with everyone's shoes off. We are pleased to report that the flights (and the connections / layovers) were a success. On the way there, with 8 hours of travel time, Cole screamed for about 5 minutes. On the way home, with over 12 hours of travel time, Cole whimpered for 5 seconds. Sam barely made a peep unless it was to chat up a fellow passenger. Both boys took 2 hour afternoon naps en route and were generally happy campers. We really couldn't have asked for more! It made for a great start (and end) to our trip and was a fun way to celebrate Cole's first flight.

Sun River and Portland for Mid Winter Break

Drew had a conference in Sun River OR this past winter and we made the call to tag along for a little vacation.  Things were slightly dampened by the fact that it appears Cole has developed car sickness since the summer. Ugh.  The drive was so long! However, it was worth it in the end and we had a wonderful time relaxing in an amazing little chalet, enjoying the snow, sitting in the hot tub, sledding and skating!  Couldn't have asked for more fun!  A stop at our favorite in Mt. Hood - El burro loco! A glass of wine after our 6 hour road trip turned into 10 hours due to car sickness!  Right before our Owl Walk.  We were told we could walk into the wood and hear the owls. What a bust!  3 cold and tired kids in the dark woods and no owls!  It's now a running joke in our home as the  tour guide kept 'hooting' trying to draw the owl's attention.  If we want someone's attention in the house we often hoot at each other now...
