He's Finally Here

We are thrilled that this afternoon we were able to bring home our second little boy. Coleson Matthew was born on Tuesday July 15th at 2:39 AM. It still remains such a blur....what a whirlwind of events. There is no way we can say Coleson's entry into this world was easy - neither was Sam's. Looks like our boys like to make a grand entrance!

Contractions started on Sunday June 13th. They were definitely more than the Braxton Hicks contractions that had been going on for weeks and more consistent than all the false labor episodes the previous days. However, the intensity built slowly. Maybe, just maybe we thought this might make for a Monday June 14th baby.

However, Monday June the 14th came. We headed to the hospital to find that after contractions all night, I was only 3cm dilated. The midwives sent us home told us to walk around and relax and come in later if things continued. Six hours later we tried again...only to find I was only 4 cm. Sam pulled the same stunt - slow slow progress. The midwives admitted me reassuring me that second babies really do come faster after the first 4 cm.

Hours later, still no baby. The midwives were starting to doubt their faster second baby predication. On Monday night, around 8PM I had an epidural as I was still only at 6cm and had a long road a head. After getting the epidural, the second baby predication began to take place and things moved along more quickly. However, we soon learned a natural delivery was not in the cards for us. After finally getting to the 10cm point, the midwife was able to determine that Cole had not yet fully dropped. She started to suspect his was stuck. Upon further review, she discovered that Cole was face up, crocked and developing quite a swollen cone head. That combined with the 'fear' of a large baby from late ultrasounds (Sam just barely made it with his 8'12 weight) and the dips in heart rate when I attempted to push resulted in the midwife recommending a c section. After over 24 hours in labor, things were going to take a different turn.

The decision was easily made to go for the c section. Despite facing a more difficult recovery, Drew and I really felt peaceful that it was the right choice. The surgery really went off without a hitch, and was very successful. The team was phenomenal and so encouraging and careful with every step which we are so thankful for. Within a hour of making the decision we were meeting our 10 lb 1 oz BIG boy! The midwife gasped when she saw Cole and told me we would have never made it. Everyone who had seen me previously was shocked that such a large baby came out of my stomach! I guess we really do grow big babies.

Here are some of our first pictures of Coleson. He is such an amazing little boy - we are so blessed that we can add him to our family!

Sun River and Portland for Mid Winter Break

Drew had a conference in Sun River OR this past winter and we made the call to tag along for a little vacation.  Things were slightly dampened by the fact that it appears Cole has developed car sickness since the summer. Ugh.  The drive was so long! However, it was worth it in the end and we had a wonderful time relaxing in an amazing little chalet, enjoying the snow, sitting in the hot tub, sledding and skating!  Couldn't have asked for more fun!  A stop at our favorite in Mt. Hood - El burro loco! A glass of wine after our 6 hour road trip turned into 10 hours due to car sickness!  Right before our Owl Walk.  We were told we could walk into the wood and hear the owls. What a bust!  3 cold and tired kids in the dark woods and no owls!  It's now a running joke in our home as the  tour guide kept 'hooting' trying to draw the owl's attention.  If we want someone's attention in the house we often hoot at each other now...

Thanksgiving

We have so much to be thankful for! We daily feel so grateful for all of the blessings in our life but it is nice to have a day to get together with family and reflect and relax. We had a wonderful Thanksgiving weekend in Long Island, NY with Drew's 'east coast' family. Sam enjoyed his second road trip out to Long Island and did fabulous! He got to see a lot of family again and finally get to meet his Great Granny! Sam got some early Christmas gifts this year and had a lot more enthusiasm unwrapping them than we expected!

Reflections

North shore School District hosted an art walk this year to highlight student work.  The theme was Imagine and students were tasked with creating some sort of 'art' that reflected the theme.  Sam came home one day and told us that he had submitted something.  What came as even more as a surprise was when we were contacted to say his piece was a qualifier to represent the school in the district art walk.  Sam was pretty thrilled with it and with his ribbon and didn't mind at all that his piece didn't move on to the next round of judging.  His best bud Owen had his work submitted as well and they enjoyed hanging out at the art show.
