Victoria

This fall we seem to be making up for our lack of travel over the summer!  About a month ago we headed up to Victoria to see Drew's mom's new set up.  We had planned to go in the summer after they moved but Grammy had a little mishap which resulted in a broken arm and a delayed visit.

We opted to take the ferry from Anacortes.  It was a beautiful ride and the kids enjoyed hanging out, enjoying the view and coloring away (Jasper enjoyed the view from the van).  We left early in the morning and Friday Harbor was beautiful when we arrived and had a slight mist over it.

The trip over was smooth and after lunch at Grammy's we decided to get out and tour around downtown Victoria.  After a long day of travel the boys were just giddy.

After a tour of downtown we went over to the pier to enjoy a little poutine (mmmm) and to watch the seals that were waiting patiently for all the tourists to give them some fishy treats.  Of course we obliged and enjoyed feeding the little guys.  They would even clap and wave for us to give them a snack.  At one point while I was feeding the seals one pesky seagull swooped down and grabbed the fish from my hand - cutting me in the process!  I was a tad worried that given their scavenger nature my hand would get infected from all the bacteria.  When I googled seagull bites the first thing that came up was a man who contracted a serious flesh eating disease - yikes! I took good care of it the rest of the weekend!

The next morning Grammy had arranged a special surprise for the kids!  We made our way to a miniature pony farm that morning.  The kids loved checking out the little guys,  grooming them, cleaning their hooves and riding them.

Sam had a bit of a meltdown during the horse riding.  He was so desperate for his turn and got a little miffed that we had him go last (he just didn't believe that the last one to go would get the longest ride).  By the time he got on his horse he was just scowling at me.  I was really hard not to laugh.  He would turn around purposely just to find me and give me his best glare.  I decided to hang back and let him do his ride.  He rounded a corner and by the time he came back he was all smiles - horse therapy at it's finest!

The rain lifted mid way through and at the end we spent a bit of time hanging out with the horses and watching them play around together.

He was back in a good mood after his ride.  Here he is giving me a pretend cranky face!

After horseback riding, lunch out, slurpee runs. playing with Jasper and Morley and park visits we had tired kids.  They were more than happy to curl out watching their new favorite - Despicable Me 2.

We had a great weekend and also managed to fit in a family photo session in hopes of getting a family photo for our Christmas cards.  Everyone left happy and we look forward to more visits.

Sun River and Portland for Mid Winter Break

Drew had a conference in Sun River OR this past winter and we made the call to tag along for a little vacation.  Things were slightly dampened by the fact that it appears Cole has developed car sickness since the summer. Ugh.  The drive was so long! However, it was worth it in the end and we had a wonderful time relaxing in an amazing little chalet, enjoying the snow, sitting in the hot tub, sledding and skating!  Couldn't have asked for more fun!  A stop at our favorite in Mt. Hood - El burro loco! A glass of wine after our 6 hour road trip turned into 10 hours due to car sickness!  Right before our Owl Walk.  We were told we could walk into the wood and hear the owls. What a bust!  3 cold and tired kids in the dark woods and no owls!  It's now a running joke in our home as the  tour guide kept 'hooting' trying to draw the owl's attention.  If we want someone's attention in the house we often hoot at each other now...

Thanksgiving

We have so much to be thankful for! We daily feel so grateful for all of the blessings in our life but it is nice to have a day to get together with family and reflect and relax. We had a wonderful Thanksgiving weekend in Long Island, NY with Drew's 'east coast' family. Sam enjoyed his second road trip out to Long Island and did fabulous! He got to see a lot of family again and finally get to meet his Great Granny! Sam got some early Christmas gifts this year and had a lot more enthusiasm unwrapping them than we expected!

Reflections

North shore School District hosted an art walk this year to highlight student work.  The theme was Imagine and students were tasked with creating some sort of 'art' that reflected the theme.  Sam came home one day and told us that he had submitted something.  What came as even more as a surprise was when we were contacted to say his piece was a qualifier to represent the school in the district art walk.  Sam was pretty thrilled with it and with his ribbon and didn't mind at all that his piece didn't move on to the next round of judging.  His best bud Owen had his work submitted as well and they enjoyed hanging out at the art show.
